This early polychromatic poster measures 35 1/2" x 24 1/2" and is constructed of paper laid down on linen cloth. The title reads “UNITED STATES ARMY RECRUITING SERVICE WANTED FOR THE UNITED STATES ARMY ABLE-BODIED MEN OF GOOD CHARACTER.” The poster shows an image of soldiers wearing the khaki field uniforms of the Spanish-American War alongside a group of soldiers wearing the 1902 service dress uniforms. Below the images, is lengthy text extolling the virtues of service in the US Army. The poster goes on to read, “A SPLENDID CHANCE TO SEE THE WORLD SERVICE AT HOME STATIONS AND IN ALASKA, HAWAII, AND THE PHILIPPINES.” & “FREE-Board, Lodging, Clothing, Baths, Gymnasiums, Schools, Libraries, Bowling Alleys.” The final paragraphs explains the opportunities for promotion, the excellent pay & retirement, the allowance given at discharge, and the opportunity to reside in a soldier’s home at retirement. There is an 8” x 10 1/2" letter affixed to the front of the poster with the heading “HEADQUARTERS UNITED STATES ARMY RECRUITING DISTRICT OF PORTLAND, MAINE.” CONDITION: the poster does exhibit staining & wear to the edges, but is substantially intact and the colors remain vivid. This rare poster is an excellent candidate for a professional restoration. (02-19771/BF). $1,000-2,000.
