REVOLVER. Cal. 44. S# 1308. Standard configuration of the transitional gun between model 1860 armies and 1873 single actions. Nickel finish, 7.5" barrel, 1-line "New York U.S. America" address, integral rear sight unique to this model. "COLTS PATENT" on left side of frame, later guns have 2 line patents. Iron grip frame contains a Colt "screwed wood block" pair of beautifully age patinaed ivory grips. Ejector housing on right side of barrel. This was not a popular model for Colt, and most of production was sold in South America, fine survivors such as this with that "cowboy look" are hard to find. Originally made in 44 rimfire, this revolver has been modified during its time of use to 44 center fire, but revolver still retains the original profile and conversion was well done by altering hammer face firing pin & drilling hole at back of frame. CONDITION: fine, all matching & complete, retains about 90% original nickel, crisp markings, very good complete rolled naval battle scene, light holster wear at muzzle. Mechanically fine, crisp rifled bore. Colt ivory grips are well fit with moderate edge wear, small chips at inside toes & age cracks. PROVENANCE: Little John's Auction 2000, Collection of Horst Kreiner. (01-24007/JS). $5,000-7,000.
