CONTRACT" C96 SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 7.63mm. S# 8986. Bbl. 5 1/2". C96 (Finnish nickname: "Ukko-Mauser" or "Old Man Mauser") semi-automatic pistol mfg. by Mauser for the supposed "Scandinavian Contract". While there is no documentation supporting the Scandinavian Contract, these pistols were numbered within their own S# block of 1-23,000, with this example falling within the first half of that range. The faceted breech is marked with Mauser's mfg. information over the top flat, with the S# marked on the left quarter flat, a double crowned "U" commercial proof on the left flat, as well as with a "1" on the right flat. Right side of the frame is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER/ OBERNDROF A NECKAR", with a Finnish boxed "SA" proof marked within the lower milled panel. Frame, floorplate, and bbl. / bbl. extension exhibit a rust blue finish, with some small parts including the trigger, safety lever, extractor, rear sight slide, and bolt stop exhibiting a nitre blue finish. Bolt is polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece grooved wood grips. Fixed blade front sight, with V-notch tangent rear sight, graduated 50-1,000. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, floorplate, lock frame, hammer, sear, locking block, as well as the grips. Bolt and bolt stop are unnumbered. CONDITION: good, with metal components retaining the majority of their original rust blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning that show through to gray patina, as well as some light superficial handling marks overall. Nitre blue parts show varying degrees of wear, with worn areas showing through to gray patina. Bright bore, exhibiting consistent light to mild pitting, while retaining well defined rifling throughout. Grips show some scattered superficial marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. (24-6863/MLW). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.
