Cal. 38 RF. S# 654. Bbl. 6" with semi circular blade sight; frame notched rear. Mfg. 1878-1882 of limited production estimated at only "hundreds" in 3 variations: Navy, Army and Police models. Navy and Police models are very similar differing in grip butts (square on Navy and rounded on Police) and bbl. lengths (6" Navy and 4 1/2" Police). Army models had square butts but with change in contour at top of backstrap; bbls, of 4 1/2", 6" and 7 1/2". Flayderman's states the XL's are the finest quality handguns made by Hopkins & Allen and suitable for military use as "Secondary Martial" firearms although no recorded military use or purchase. H&A usually known for low priced "Suicide Specials" yet they were also the makers of Merwin, Hulbert & Co. revolvers. Barrel marked with company name and 1875 patent date. Top strap has "XL NAVY" and "38-100 CAL.". Internet research shows serial numbers to be under 1,000 with 864 as highest found. Ingenious ejection assembly that is spring loaded to go into position when its latch is activated. Nickel finished with varnished walnut grips. CONDITION: good general appearance with noticeable finish loss on cylinder. Peppery finish loss on portions of frame near cylinder, trigger guard and at muzzle. Very good grip finish with light handling marks. Fine, crisp mechanical functioning. Missing detent acting spring that captivates ejector rod. Fair to good bore with minimal pitting; distinct rifling. (01-22318/NW). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
