COMBINATION BY P. OBERHAMMER. Cal. 16 Ga. & 8x57mm. S# 4182. The innovative Munich gunsmith Peter Oberhammer came up with this design for an auxiliary shotgun barrel combined with a bolt action rifle and patented the idea in 1896 shortly before he retired. Most of the known combos built on this patent were made by his son Ludwig. These unusual weapons are pictured in some advertisements of the era. This combo has an under slung 16 Ga. barrel that by forward operation of a 6" lever on left side a spring loaded firing mechanism on front part of rifle bottom metal is cocked and barrel can rotate counter clockwise to expose shotgun chamber for loading. A toggling safety for this mechanism is on right side which covers a gold inlaid "S" when in safe position. Bolt action rifle barrel is fitted with short quarter rib holding one standing leaf "V" notch rear sight. A silver bead front is in short ramp. Top of barrel is engraved "P. Oberhammer. Kgl. Bair. Hofbuchsenmacher. Munchen." Model 98 large ring Mauser action has had front portion of ring turned down to accept firing and locking housing associated with shotgun barrel. Right side of receiver ring has been grooved to allow feeding of shotgun cartridge. Standard bottom metal has been fitted with lever to remove floorplate. Trigger mechanism has front trigger being a push forward set for rifle use. Rear trigger fires shotgun. Separate trigger guard is steel. Action and other associated metal parts are engraved with simple scroll within line borders. Turned down bolt handle has had knob slimmed and checkered. A flip-up peep sight that cams with bolt operation is installed behind action tang. Sunburst horn capped pistol grip stock of European walnut with slight curly grain is fitted with checkered horn buttplate and features shadow line right hand cheekpiece, sling loop, side panels and checkered grip. Sides of forend wood extend to muzzle with checkered bottom piece screwed on. CONDITION: fine. Metal parts retaining about 80% original finish silvered on high edges and with some operational rubbing. Wood retains most of its original oil finish with some scattered marks. Bores are bright and shiny and mechanism operates well once its intricacies are mastered. A really cool gun! PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (24-6568/MGM). CURIO. $4,000-8,000.
