EAR NEW YORK TYPE REPEATING TURRET RIFLE W/ TRANSITIONAL FEATURES BETWEEN 2ND & 3RD MODELS. Cal. 40. S# 651. P. W. Porter of Memphis, Tennessee designed this interesting rifle during the early 1850s. This unique example has 25" tapered oct. bbl. marked "ADDRESS" "P.W. PORTER" "NEW-YORK" & w/ patent dates on rear portion of top left flat. Bbl. retains its original offset rear sight. Front sight is missing. The S# which is stamped on bottom of bbl. corresponds to the end of production of the 2nd model & before introduction of the 3rd model. Action retains the top loading lever as found on the 2nd model, but has later offset mule ear hammer & 8 shot turret. Operating lever is retained by latch at rear bottom of tang. Buttstock of American walnut has steel crescent buttplate. CONDITION: good, essentially "as found." Metal parts appear to be mostly gray to brown patina w/ considerable coating of grime undisturbed for many years. Atypical loading & operating levers appear blacksmith made. Stock retains most of what appears to be its original oil finish. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19073/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-6,000.
