RIFLE. Cal. 45, 2 7/8" (45-100 Sharps Straight). S# 20387. Bbl. 30" rnd. measuring 7/8" diameter at the muzzle. Top of bbl. at breech has retailer marking "J.P. LOWER/ DENVER, COL". Bbl. forward of the rear sight is marked "Old Reliable" and "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN.". German silver blade Rocky Mountain front sight with Lawrence patent folding leaf rear sight. Hammerless falling block action with safety mounted behind trigger. Schnabel tipped forearm and straight grip walnut stock with checkered steel buttplate. Total of approx. 8,700 1878 Sharps-Borchardt rifles were mfg. 1878-1871. Of those approx. 31 were Express rifles. CONDITION: metal has faded to mottled gray/brown showing surface corrosion. Wood shows heavy wear with handling marks and large dents. Stock is cracked at head with a large chip missing on the left side of the top tang and having a screw type repair right of the top tang. Bore has lightly worn rifling shows small spots of pitting. PROVENANCE: Norman Olliff Estate. (01-27234/DS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
