SILENCER. Cal. 35. S# IRS2905. Designed by Hiram Percy Maxim (son of noted machine gun inventor Hiram Maxim) during the early years after the turn of the 20th century, Maxim's silencer design was notably different than contemporary silencer designs, utilizing a more expensive and time consuming design which utilized curved vanes within the silencer to spin cooling gas and reduce pressure, which would also be used in early car muffler designs. The rear face of the tube is marked "MAXIM SILENT FIREARMS CO./ NEW YORK./ PAT. MARCH 30, 1909.", with "35" stamped at the rear edge of the tube above the muzzle threads, and with the amnesty registered S# "IRS2905" stamped on the underside. Steel construction, featuring 7 grooves towards the center of the body. Exterior exhibits a blue finish overall. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: contemporary blue soft case. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting some areas and streaks of wear and thinning fading to gray and brown patinas, scattered spots of light surface oxidation, as well as a patch of darkened mild to moderate oxidation towards the forward edge. Baffles remain intact, exhibiting heavy (likely old) carbon build up. The Model 1909s crimped steel design ultimately proved to be fragile. This, paired with the implementation of the 1934 National Firearms Act, resulted in many Maxim silencers being destroyed throughout the years, largely owing to their scarcity today. NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT SILENCER REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE. (03-2051/MLW). CURIO CLASS III. $500-1,000.
