Cal. 57. NSN. Bbl. 31". Made by Springfield Armory for cadets at West Point, bbl. is normally 40" but national archives indicate that some were made w/ 31" & 34" bbls. This musket has bbl. affixed w/ two spring retained bands. Stock shows inlet piece of wood where a third band should be. Rear of bbl. is stamped w/ "VP" & eagle head proofs. Lock has "US" & eagle in front of hammer & "SPRING" "FIELD" "1844" at rear. Stock is iron mounted & has aftermarket fitting of steel crescent type buttplate. There are remnants of inspector's markings on left side opposite lock. Bayonet lug is on bottom of bbl. & trumpet shaped ramrod is present. CONDITION: fair to good. Bbl. w/ perhaps traces of original brown has considerable pitting around breech. Lock is gray to brown, almost black. Stocks show old refinish w/ sharp edges rounded. There are some cracks in bbl. channel on right side. Rusted bore, lock is operable. (01-21248/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
