Cal. 50-70. S# 1264. With a production total of 3,422, this is a relatively scarce trapdoor rifle. It has 29 5/8" bbl. mounted w/ 1868 type rear sight w/ ladder. Trapdoor action marked "1870" w/ eagle head & "US" on breechblock. S# is on rear of bbl. & side of thin early style receiver ring. Lock is from an 1863 dated Springfield musket. Scaled down stock is iron mounted. Thin buttplate marked "US". Sm. sized trigger guard does not have provision for sling swivel. Unique ramrod has holding swell 5" back from tip. Stock attaches to bbl. w/ 2 spring retained bands. Stock marked w/ inspectors initials on left side. Left side of butt near plate stamped "14" & "76". CONDITION: good. Metal parts show heavy cleaning overall w/ silver highlights over scattered pitting. Wood has old refinish w/ sharp edges slightly rounded & w/ a lg. number of marks & dings. Bore is very good to fine, shiny. Mechanically good. (01-20334/MGM). ANTIQUE. $600-900.
