BACKSPRING LOCK HAMMER SHOTGUN CIRCA 1872. Cal. 12 Ga., 2 5/8". S# 1159. Bbl. 26 5/16". Decarbonized steel bbls. appear to be original length & are engraved “PARKER BROS” “MAKERS” “MERRIDEN CONN” & “DECARBONIZED STEEL” on narrow swamped rib. Bbls. have flats soldered on in early style & are stamped “JAL”(?) The initials “FGR”(?) are above S# on lumps. Early style lifter action is stamped “TB”over S# on water table & have early square junction w/ standing breech. Lifter pin extends through top of action. Back spring locks w/ flat faced serpentine non-rebounding hammers are unmarked. November 13th 1866 patent date is on triggerplate. Locks & action are line border engraved. Triggerguard is also unmarked. Straight grip American walnut buttstock measures 13 5/8" over steel buttplate w/ lg. top spur. Widely spaced checkering is at grip. Matching splinter forend w/ steel tip attaches to bbls. w/ captive side bolt through oval steel escutcheons. MEASUREMENTS: BORE DIA.: Left .725. Right .717. BORE RESTRICTIONS: Left .010 IC. Right .008 IC. WALL THICKNESS: Left .026. Right .040. DAH: 2 1/2". DAC: 1 11/16". WEIGHT: 7 lbs 10 oz. CONDITION: fair to good, showing heavy use w/ all metal parts worn & cleaned to silver gray. Stocks w/ old varnish finish over considerably worn surfaces filling what remains of heavily worn checkering. Bores are fair, considerably pitted. Action is surprisingly tight. Locks are good. Hammers loose on tumblers. It is estimated that fewer than 1,000 of these guns were mfg. (01-20012/MGM). ANTIQUE. $500-1,500.
