Cal. 45-70. S# NSN. One of the first successful bolt action rifles designed. About 5,000 were made between 1880-83. Rifle has tubular magazine with single shot cut off lever on left side of action. The fairly scarce 28" half round, half octagon barrel is fitted with ladder type rear and German silver blade front sights. Octagon action has caliber marking on left rear. Bolt has all Remington markings at rear ahead of external hammer. Unusual pistol grip buttstock has steel buttplate and is checkered at grip and forend. CONDITION: good as partially refinished. Barrel and magazine retaining about half original blue, balance showing some cleaned light rusting. Action is in similar condition with very little blue remaining on bottom which is mostly brown. Stock has oil refinish and cleaned checkering and also exhibits well done repair in front of grip. Bore is shiny with scattered pitting, strong rifling throughout. Mechanically good. (01-25745/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.
