ENFIELD BOLT-ACTION MILITARY CARBINE. Cal. 303 British. S# 151. Numbers match on receiver, bbl., bolt & rear sight ladder. Bbl. 20 3/4". Ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. Blade front sight. This conversion for the R.I.C. was fabricated from Lee Enfield & Lee Metford cavalry carbines. The conversion was designed to allow the use of the pattern 1888 sword bayonet. The forward end of the rifle, both wood & metal, was extensively modified to accomplish this conversion. The muzzle has approx. 1" collar added to fit the sword bayonet muzzle ring. Butt socket is marked on the right side "crown / VR / ENFIELD / 1898 / L.E.C. / I". The bolt has the carbine style forward swept handle w/ flattened knob. Safety is mounted on the cocking piece. Bolt is equipped w/ the sliding dust cover. Magazine cut-off is present. The bbl. is marked over chamber w/ "E" denoting Enfield rifling. Bbl. & receiver have the opposed arrows indicating the arm was sold out of service. Bbl. has British export proofs on the left side. Hardwood stock set. Brass trap buttplate & Lee Enfield rifle type nose assembly. Buttstock is marked on the left side w/ a Birmingham roundel dated 1904 & "I". Brass markings disc has "R.I.C 12.'04 7785". Stock has "P" on the right side of the grip & view marks underneath grip. The forend & handguard were extensively modified by the arsenal conversion & shows correct proper arsenal quality workmanship. There is a circular inlay which appears to be mother of pearl app. one inch in diameter in the top of the handguard. Bayonet bar & sling swivel are present on the bbl. band. Forend not drilled for cleaning rod. MAGS: 1 detachable six rd w/ "WD" marking. CONDITION: stock set has the arsenal rework finish from the conversion with moderate wear and handling marks. Metal retains 75% of its lightly worn original finish. Very good shiny bore with strong lands. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of George Staden S&W Member #3451. (25-20/RW).
