SCABBARD. Overall length: 37". Blade length: 31 1/2". The single fullered French mfg. blade has blue & gold decoration over the first third of the blade. 1 Side has a sm. spray of arms w/ swag below surrounding the central motif that includes 16 stars encircling the words, “UNITED STATES”. The other side has a similar spray of arms w/ swag below surrounding the word, “LIBERTE”. Solid brass briquet style hilt. Brass mounted leather scabbard. The fact that there are 16 stars enclosing the words, “UNITED STATES” indicates the sword was made between 1796 when Tennessee was admitted to the Union & 1803 when Ohio became a state. CONDITION: blade has a mottled gray patina. Blue & gold decoration is about 60% intact. Engraving is sharp & easily legible. Hilt has a rich dark mustard patina as do the mounts on the scabbard. Leather is a bit stiff but quite solid w/ most of the stitching remaining. (02-15864/BF). $2,000-2,500.
