INSCRIBED “LIEUT JOHN W. MCDOWELL USA”. Fresh “attic find” from Kentucky estate. This is US regulation officer’s sword 1840 till 1850. The only officer listed in Heitman is lt. John McDowell, 2nd New Jersey Volunteers for the Mexican War when this would have been the regulation pattern. This rare sword was only made by Ames and Horstmann, this is the Horstmann import from Solingen. CONDITION: 32” straight blade etched with large “US” and American eagle and stars is gray overall. Brass guard bent and original brass mounted leather scabbard is shrunk so sword will go all the way in. Inscription is easily read in a fine script. (02-19428/JS). $1,500-1,800.
