CLOSURES. A seldom seen example of a US Navy WWII deck jacket. This rare jacket was introduced in 1943, superseding the zipper front jacket. The hook closure deck jacket was only produced for one year. The zipper front jacket was too difficult to use with gloves and the zipper often became frozen. The improved 1943 version featured a hook closure system, solving the frozen zipper problem. The 1943 deck jacket featured a large "U.S. NAVY" stencil on the top of the back. This modification was done in order to keep Navy personnel on shore operations from being mistaken as enemy troops by other U.S. and friendly forces. The jacket itself is made of a corduroy-like material with very narrow wales. It has a knit collar, cuffs, and waistband with a blue wool lining. A tag in the back reads "NAVY DEPARTMENT CONTRACT NXSS 22371 SIZE 46". CONDITION: jacket generally shows light wear over with some oxidation to hook closures. All closures remain operational. (02-23622/BF). $3,000-5,000.
