SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 38 Auto. S# 66489. Bbl. 5". Model 1910 (Type III) semi-automatic pistol, mfg. by Webley & Scott. The Type III pistols (designated the "Type III" by Gordon Bruce) were of the last approximately 365 pistols produced. These pistols were mfg'd. without a grip safety and featured internal hammers as well as William Whiting's patented side safety lever mechanism. This example is marked with the winged Webley & Scott bullet logo above "W & S", followed by "WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD/ LONDON & BIRMINGHAM/ .38 AUTOMATIC PISTOL" on the left side of the slide. Left side of the frame is marked with the S# "66489" at the rear. Frame and slide exhibit a Crown/BV commercial nitro proof, with Crown/BP and Crown/BV proofs stamped on the bbl. over the top of the chamber. Frame, slide, and bbl. exhibit a lustrous high polish blue finish, with smaller components being polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered hard rubber grips. Standard blade front sight and dovetailed square-notch rear sight. Frame features the aforementioned side safety lever as well as a frame-mounted lanyard loop on the left side. All numbers are matching and include the frame, slide, and bbl. Interior of the right grip panel is matching via the last three digits of the S# in pencil. Left panel's S# is heavily faded, hardly visible, and is mostly unidentifiable, but appears to match. MAGS: one 8-rd. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their original lustrous factory blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear that show through to a pleasing brown patina, scattered superficial handling marks, as well as scattered flecks of light to mild surface oxidation overall. Grip straps exhibit moderate surface-level oxidation, with the front grip strap also exhibiting wear through to a brown patina. In-the-white components exhibit some scattered flecks of light surface oxidation, as well as some small spots of age-related discoloration overall. Muzzle shows a few dings on the left side. Mirror bore, exhibiting well-defined rifling throughout. Grips exhibit some superficial marks, nicks, and light smoothing to the diamonds, with the grip exhibiting a break at the bottom right corner of the panel. A very nice example of a seldom encountered Webley Model 1910 Type III semi-automatic pistol. (24-4042/MLW). CURIO. $3,000-4,000.
