FINE ORIGINAL CONDITION. Cal. 14 Bore. S# NSN. Hugh Lumsden Snowie is listed at 83 Church St. Inverness in 1874. This well built gun most likely dates from 15 years before that time. It has 29" barrels made of intricate skelp damascus. Broad top rib is engraved with maker's name and address. Breech plugs are well filed and have unvented platinum blowouts. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with London black powder proofs for "15" bore. Breech iron is nearly fully scroll engraved. Front spring locks are fitted with serpentine hammers and are engraved with very well cut shaded scroll. "H. Snowie" is at the front of each lockplate. Trigger plate has scroll engraved stylized pineapple finial. Trigger guard is engraved with open scroll. Stock of very attractive well marbled and lightly figured European walnut measures 14-1/4" over steel buttplate with scroll engraved long top tang. Stock attaches to barrels with captive side bolt and is checkered at grip and forend. A vacant silver oval is at top of grip. Ebony ramrod with brass tip and tail (worm under cap) mounts through two plain pipes and pineapple thimble. MEASUREMENTS: DAH: 2-1/16". DAC: 1-9/16". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14-1/4". WEIGHT: 7 lb. 0 oz. CONDITION: exceptionally fine. Barrels retaining over 90% original brown which shows off distictive damascus pattern. Nearly all color case hardening remains on locks. Trigger guard and buttplate retain most of their original blue. Stock retains most of its French polish original finish with a goodly amount of marks and scratches most of which are at rear of butt. Bores are bright and shiny. Locks are crisp. A very handsome shotgun. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (01-26118/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
