LOW WALL SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 22 RF. S#5104. Bbl. 24 1/4". Model 1885 Low Wall single shot rifle mfg. by Winchester during the second year of 1885 production (1886). Top flat of the octagonal bbl. is marked with Winchester's mfg. information, with "22 CAL R.F." marked towards the breech. Lower receiver tang is marked with Winchester's patent information, followed by the S# "5104". Frame retains traces of its original case color hardened finish, with the bbl. retaining traces of its original blue finish. Plain wood straight grip buttstock, with crescent buttplate and ebony tipped schnabel tip forend. Buttstock exhibits a varnished finish, with the forend exhibiting what appears to be an oil stained finish. Bbl. is fitted with a contemporary dovetailed forend screw slot. Dovetailed aftermarket dual blade(diminutive brass blade and standard size blade) front sight, with V-notch rear sight, and tang mount aperture rear sight. CONDITION: metal components retain traces of their original factory finishes in protected areas, with the balance exhibiting a gray patina, with light to mild pitting and oxidation, as well as areas of age related discoloration overall. Bright bore, exhibiting scattered areas of consistent mild pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Wood furniture shows scattered marks and minor impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. An early example of a Winchester Model 1885 single shot rifle.
