LEVER ACTION RIFLE WITH CODY LETTER. Cal. 40-65. S# 9155. Bbl. 26". Model 1886 lever action rifle mfg. by Winchester in 1887. Top flat of the octagonal bbl. is marked "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/ -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-", with the cal. designation stamped at the breech. Upper receiver tang is marked with the model designation, with the lower tang being stamped with patent information. Metal components exhibit a blue finish. Plain American walnut straight grip buttstock with crescent buttplate and smooth wood handguard. Buttstock and handguard have been revarnished at one time. Front sight has been replaced with a Lyman blade front sight (bead no longer present), with an unmarked aftermarket V-notch rear sight. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody Firearms Museum letter indicating that this example was received in the warehouse on October 6th of 1887 and was shipped with 54 other arms (Order Number: 24405) that same day. CONDITION: receiver, lever, buttplate, and forend cap exhibiting a mottled gray patina, with scattered areas of light to moderate pitting present overall. Bbl. and mag. tube exhibit wear and thinning overall, with areas of wear showing through to a pleasant brown patina. Bright bore, exhibiting moderate pitting and retaining good rifling throughout. Wood furniture exhibits scattered marks, dings, and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. (01-25218/MLW). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.
