42” x 62” bunting and cotton, stenciled on hoist “SEC. OF NAVY”, 4 brass grommets, circa 1940. The flag for the Secretary of the Navy was adopted in 1867 and it is still used today. As with other military and related colors, regulations govern their sizes and use. This flag is flown on ship when Secretary of War is aboard. According to Navy Regulations, these flags are broken at the main truck of a naval vessel or at the normal point of hoist of the commander's flag at a shore installation.
