MODELL SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL. Cal. 7.65mm. S# 3972. Bbl. 3 3/8". Designed by Adalbert Kadits, the P.B. Spezial, the P.B. (Polizei-und Behordenpistole or "Police and authorities pistol) Spezial pistol was originally mfg. by August Menz. In 1938, a lawsuit from Walther forced Menz to drop "P.B." from the title, and the company is believed to have gone bankrupt, subsequently selling to Theodore Bergmann Erben G.m.b.H. Conflicting information sets the total production of the Spezial pistol to be between approx. 1,000-5,000, with Bergmann believed to have only produced approx. 200 examples in the 3,788-3,988 S# range. While significantly resembling Walther's PPK, the Spezial Modell does exhibit a few notable mechanical differences which set it apart from its contemporary. This example, mfg. by Bergmann, is marked "THEODORE BERGMANN ERBEN/ WAFFENFABRIK SUHL/ SPEZIAL-MODELL" on the left side of the slide. Left side of the frame is marked with the S# "3972", with a German Crown/N commercial nitro proof marked on the right side of the frame, slide, and bbl. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the bbl. and chamber area, which are polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered brown Galalith plastic grips, which are marked "Special" at the top of the panels. The slide features an unusual safety lever, which rotates the firing pin away from the hammer, as well as a grooved matte rib, with a fixed blade front sight and U-notch rear sight. Disassembly noticeably differs from the PPK, with a lever present on the interior of the trigger guard, that when lowered, allows for removal of the slide. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, trigger, takedown lever, bbl. (left side of chamber), as well as the slide. MAGS: 1 8-rd. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: black leatherette case marked "F.&.S." on the latch, containing a scan of a Model P.B. Spezial catalog listing, as well as a scan of a cased Model P.B. Spezial pistol from November of 1998 noted to be with a sub-caliber conversion kit. CONDITION: excellent, with metal components retaining bountiful amounts of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting a few areas of light to mild wear and thinning that show through to gray and brown patinas, a few superficial handling marks, as well as some spots of light surface oxidation overall. Brilliant mirror bore, retaining well defined rifling throughout. Grips exhibit some light smoothing to their checkering and a few superficial marks from handling and storage, with the right grip exhibiting a repaired crack that runs the length of the panel. Black leatherette case is good overall. An especially nice condition example of a seldom encountered Menz/Bergmann Spezial Modell pistol. PROVENANCE: the Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (25-299/MLW). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.
