RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 65395. Bbl. 23" heavy oct. Many surplus percussion Sharps rifles were converted to cartridge rifles after the Civil War. E.C. Meacham of St. Louis was one business that converted these rifles to cartridge. The gun falls outside of the known Meacham conversion serial number range, so it was possibly assembled by another retailer or gunsmith. Beach style front sight. Lawrence patent ladder rear sight graduated to 800yds. Top of bbl. marked w/ Bridgeport address & "OLD RELIABLE". Left side of bbl. marked "CAL. 45 2 2/10". Double set triggers w/ rear trigger not functioning properly. Walnut stock set. Left side of butt has saddle ring plate but no provision for saddle bar. CONDITION: forend shows a few cracks, stock set otherwise has a crack extenidng from left of rear tang to above saddle bar plate, a few chips, scattered dings & handling wear. Metal is a gray patina w/ a few dings & scattered oxidation. Good bore w/ pitting but strong rifling. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22523/MJC). ANTIQUE. $2000-3000.
