CARBINE. Cal 52. S# 15001. Standard brass mounted configuration, 37.75" overall, 21.5" barrel, adjustable long range rear sight, brass blade front sight, "SHARPS /PATENT / 1852" on lock, "SHARPS / PATENT / 1848" on back of frame and S# on tang, 9" long saddle bar. Famously nicknamed "John Brown" Sharps, as many shipped to Kansas Abolitionists May 1855, one John Brown shipped carbine was close in S# to subject, 15012. Many guns in this serial range (14800-15100) were issued to 1st California cavalry, and 1st & 2nd NY Veteran cavalry regiments. Consecutive S# 15000 was issued to 2nd NYV cavalry in 1864 from National Archives records. CONDITION: good to very good overall, all original and matching, honest well used example. Barrel overall has gray/plum patina, traces of case color on frame, smooth cleaned brass. Mechanics are fine, but Maynard capping device missing cover screws and spring, not functional, crisp rifled bore. (01-27010/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.
