Cal. 44. S# 9525. Bbl. 26'' heavy octagon measuring 1'' across flats at muzzle. Top flat has 3 line Hartford address. Dovetail mounted front sight w/ replacement bone blade. Lawrence patent graduated leaf rear sight. Slant breech percussion action. 1852 dated lock has pellet primer feed attached. Left side of action has 3 line patent marking w/ 1848 date. Double set triggers. Pewter tipped walnut forearm & straight grip stock w/ steel carbine buttplate. Right side has rectangular lid iron patchbox. WEIGHT: 9 lbs, 3.2 ozs. Total of 2,970 model 1853 sporting rifles were mfg. July 1854 to Dec 1859. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: spare latch plate found in patchbox. CONDITION: good. Metal has faded to a smooth brown patina showing small dents & spots of light pitting. Stocks have added finish over wear & handling marks. Action & triggers are sound.
