RIFLE. Cal. 45, 2 4/10" Sharps Straight. S# 158200. Bbl. 32" octagon to rnd. with Bridgeport address. Wind gauge spirit level front sight, filler in rear dovetail, with long range Vernier tang sight. Blue finished bbl. with case colored action. Plain trigger. Schnabel tipped walnut forearm and straight grip walnut stock with checkered steel buttplate and hand checkering. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Sharps letter from Dr. Richard J. Labowskie stating "Sharps rifle serial #158200 has been located in the original records of the Sharps Rifle Company. It is listed in Order Book No. 4 as a Model 1874 Long Range Rifle No. 1 and was invoiced at the Bridgeport factory on August 4, 1877 to Liddle & Kaeding, gun and sporting goods dealers of San Francisco, California, and stated to be "for Exhibition. The rifle is further described in the record as being .45 caliber, using the 2 & 4/10 inch shell and weighing 9 3/4 pounds. The price was $125 less 20 +5%. No other description was entered in the record. The No. 1 Long Range Rifles of this period commonly had single triggers, windage and vernier tang sights, and 34 inch half octagonal barrels.". CONDITION: bbl. has 80% dull lightly faded original blue. Action retains 40% lightly visible fading case colors. Original wood finish shows light wear with scattered scratches and marks. Left side of forearm is cracked at the tip. Bore is generally bright showing sound rifling. (01-27576/DS). ANTIQUE. $7,000-11,000.
