Cal. 17 Bore (Groove diameter 694. 6 groove rifling). S# NSN. Samuel Henry Staudenmayer worked for John Manton until he set up on his own in 1799. He worked at 32 Cockspur Street between 1814-25. This rifle shows some early features and might have been built by Staudenmayer but most probably by his executors who continued the business until 1834. This large bore rifle has 30" octagon barrel of twist steel with under rib. Top flat is engraved with maker's name and address. A "V" notch standing leaf rear sight with two nested leaves and silver bead front are installed. Breech plug with unvented platinum blowout has large oval silver poincon with maker's name on top. Breech iron is engraved with full coverage large shaded scroll. Front spring lock with flat faced serpentine hammer has back sliding safety and is engraved with open scroll. Maker's name is under barrel. Trigger plate has pineapple finial and trigger is set. Trigger guard with scroll engraved bow has coiled tang forming pistol grip. Stump figured European walnut half stock with horn tip is fitted with scroll engraved steel buttplate with long top tang and large rectangular patchbox on right side of butt. Stock also features checkered grip, swept shadow line right hand cheekpiece and sling eye. Stock attaches to barrel with captive sidebolt through oval silver escutcheons. Newer walnut ramrod with brass tail is held by two plain pipes and will filed thimble. A silver rectangle at top of grip is engraved with an ostrich with what appears to be a snake in its bill. CONDITION: good with repair at grip. Barrel retaining nearly all of a re-brown which does not show pattern very well. Other metal parts show cleaning and subsequent toning to grayish brown. A good amount of original blue remains on patchbox cover. Stock retains most of its original finish with many marks and scratches. Repair through grip is fairly obvious with epoxy infill but does not flex. Bore is good, shiny with strong rifling, lightly pitted. Lock is good. Set trigger works. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (01-26130/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
