Cal. 50. S# 20074. Bbl. 21 1/2", round with an octagon shank. Brass blade front sight. Carbine leaf rear sight. Single-shot action is opened by depressing the latch forward of the trigger, allowing the bbl. to pivot downwards. Action has a saddle ring and bar on the left side. Walnut forearm and stock with steel carbine buttplate. Left side of receiver is marked "MANUFACTURED BY / MAS. ARMS CO. / CHICKAPEE FALLS" along with "ADDRESS / POULTNEY / TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A.". Total quantity of over 30,000 mfg. 1861-1865. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: includes a Civil War weapons search from "www.civilwarweapons.com." Search results show that this Smith carbine, S# 20074, is a "range match" for the 11th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry / July 1864. A "range match" indicates that the weapon's SN is within the SN range of identical weapons issued to the Civil War regiment listed. Therefore, a high probability exists that the piece was issued to a soldier in the regiment listed. CONDITION: metal has fading finish showing scattered light pitting. Sanded and refinished wood shows dents and handling marks. Forearm is missing large chips on right side, forward of action, and left side at tip.
