SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 45 S&W. S# 2202. Bbl. 7" with fluted rib, short ejector housing, and pinned semi-circular blade front sight. Distinctive features include the bbl. catch attached to the gracefully shaped frame and its rnd. recoil plate. 6-shot fluted cyl. Blue finish with case colored hammer and trigger guard. 2-piece walnut grips. Total of 3,035 mfg. in 1875, almost the entire production of this model was ordered by the U.S. Ordnance Department. Many were issued to the U.S. 4th Cavalry seeing service in the Geronimo Campaign and were used in black troopers, "Buffalo Soldiers" of the 9th & 10th U.S. Cavalry. The Schofield revolvers were also used by outlaws including the James and Youngers, as well as U.S. Marshall Bill Tilghman and Custer's Chief Scout "Lonesome Charlie" Reynolds. Bottom of bbl. lug has inspectors initials "L" & "P". Bottom of butt is stamped "US". CONDITION: frame retains over 40% nicely visible blue blending with areas of cleaning on the right side with scattered spots of light pitting. Grip straps have faded gray appearance. Bbl. and cyl. retain blue in protected areas with balance having a cleaned appearance showing scattered very light pitting. Cyl. fails to rotate properly when cycled causing the hammer to catch during cocking. Bright bore showing scattered spots of mild pitting and oxidation while retaining intact rifling.
