FIELD OFFICERS SWORD. Overall length: 39 1/2". Blade length: 31 1/4". This sword has the general feel of a highly embellished M1860 Staff & Field officers sword. It has a blade that is diamond in cross section & etched over 2/3 of its length w/ various foliate, military & patriotic motifs. 1 Side of the sword has a lg. panel that is etched, "Presented to Capt. William Antoninus Havanaugh. By Company B. Bernard School. 1897.-1898.". The makers mark etched at the ricasso reads, "RIDABOCK. & CO. NEW YORK. N.Y.". Very ornate gilded brass hilt w/ a pierced eagle in the guard & a fold down inner guard. There is a single extra heavily embellished branch flowing into the knuckle bow. Ornate urn shaped pommel. Wire wrapped sharkskin grip. Gilded brass mounted plated scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina w/ some areas of light discoloration. Etching remains quite crisp. Hilt retains most of its gilded finish. The fold down guard is missing its friction fit ball. Grip shows light overall wear. Scabbard mounts have significant areas of original gilding. Scabbard plating shows light wear. (02-17537/BF). $600-800.
