CARBINE. Cal. 44-40. S# 163 (on left side of receiver tangs beneath stock). Bbl. 19 7/8". Model 1892 (a near exact copy of Winchester's Model 1873) lever action carbine mfg. at the Spanish state arsenal in Oviedo, Spain. The top of the bbl. is hand engraved "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS", which has been added at a later date. Upper receiver tang is marked "ARTILLERIA/ OVIEDO 1892". Underside of lower tang and left interior of upper tang are marked with an encircled "MR" proof. Right side of rear bbl. band is marked with a partially legible proof, that shows "P". Front of forearm cap is stamped with an encircled "P". Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall. Plain wood near full length carbine forearm and plain wood straight grip stock with carbine style buttplate. Rear bbl. band features a spring retainer. Sides of the buttstock are stamped with an added Winchester trademark logo, with the right side also exhibiting a faint illegible circular cartouche (beneath sling staple loop) and a faint "No 25". Buttplate tang is stamped with a "CP" within an oval proof, with an illegible (possibly "MS") proof marked just ahead on the comb. Standard fixed blade front sight with carbine style folding leaf rear sight graduated 2-8. 2-screw dust cover rail with checkered oval thumbprint. Left side of the receiver is mounted with a 5 1/8" saddle ring bar. CONDITION: metal components retain large amounts of their apparent arsenal blue finish, exhibiting some areas of light to mild wear and thinning fading to gray patina, scattered superficial handling marks, as well as light surface oxidation overall. Hammer has faded to a mottled gray patina. Bright bore, exhibiting a consistent scattering of light to mild pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Wood furniture shows numerous scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, as well as some chipping along the lower receiver tang and forearm cap, but otherwise remains sound. An intriguing Spanish copy of the iconic Winchester 1873 rifle. (25-1349/MLW). CURIO. $500-1,000.
