FROM SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR BY ALLEN GEORGE NEWMAN (1875-1940). This magnificent bronze was created by Allen George Newman. Newman was an American sculptor born in New York & studied under his brother-in-law, John Quincy Adams Ward, & at the National Academy of Design. Most of his works were chiefly monumental works for parks, cemeteries, etc. Other examples of his monumental work include the “Triumph of Peace” in the Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia; “General Sheridan” in Scranton, Pennsylvania; however, his most famous work was this example here known as “The Hiker”. “The Hiker” was described by sculptor, Laredo Taft “as the best bronze soldier in America”. The monumental version of “The Hiker” was also first installed as part of a memorial in the North Burial ground in Providence, Rhode Island in the section for Spanish-American War dead. For a time, “The Hiker” served as the official monument of the United Spanish War Veterans (USWV). Newman’s image of “The Hiker” bears resemblance to an image created in 1899 by one of America’s famous artists, Frederick Remington, who sketched a pose of a Rough Rider while he was a war correspondent in Cuba. Indeed “The Hiker” represents a Spanish-American War Soldier & in addition to holding the military issue of the day, a Krag rifle, he also has a U.S. brass belt buckle on his belt & a cartridge pouch. There is no question that “The Hiker” actually represents a US Rough Rider Soldier. The bronze is signed on the base, “Copyright 1904 by Allen G. Newman, sculptor”. The opposite side of the base also signed, “JNO William Inc Bronze Foundry, New York”. SIZE: Approx. 28” h x 9” across base. CONDITION: The bronze is in wonderful original untouched condition. The base does exhibit some scattered verdigris. A truly historic, iconic & wonderful American bronze figure. (02-14683). $8,000-12,000.
