SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45/70. S# 517377. Bbl. 21 7/8". Buffington "R" ladder aperture rear sight. Blade sporting front sight. The rifle was modified to sport by removing the upper band, the rod bayonet feature, and shortening the barrel and stock to a carbine configuration. The breech block is dated 1884. The flat lock plate is marked "(eagle) U.S. Springfield." The forend was cut approx. 4" beyond the lower band. The stock is marked with a faint boxed "SWP 1891" and has a "5 L 103" in white on the right side of the butt. The buttplate is the solid type. The swivel has been removed from the one-piece trigger guard. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: green and tan nylon padded case. CONDITION: The much modified stock has areas of added, as well as removed, finish, with two brass reinforcing pins on the left side between the lock screws. The metal has traces of blue turning gray with patina, moderate wear, and handling marks. Bore has strong lands, but with frosting and light pitting throughout. (01-24678/RW). ANTIQUE. $200-400.
