RIFLE. Cal. 58 RF. NSN. Approx. 5,000 altered at Springfield using Model 1861 percussion muskets. Bbl. 40" with fixed front sight and folding leaf rear sight. Breechblock is released by a thumb latch on the right side and rotates upward for loading. This is the first model of the trapdoor breechblock and is easily recognizable by its shape and pinion ejection system. "1865" dated Springfield lock. 3-band walnut stock with iron fittings. Left ear has 2 weakly visible cartouches. Buttplate is stamped "U.S." at peak, stock is stamped with rack # "18". Tulip tipped iron ramrod. CONDITION: bright finished bbl. shows evidence of cleaning with scattered handling marks and spots of pitting. Breech section, lock, and fittings have largely faded to brown. Heavily sanded and refinished stock shows some remaining marks and dents. Sound action and lock. Heavily pitted bore retains largely intact rifling. PROVENANCE: Estate of Russell Dickerman. (01-27123/DS). ANTIQUE. $900-1,500.
