RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. NSN. Bbl. 32 1/2". Replacement brass blade front sight with a folding leaf read sight mounted 3" forward of the receiver. Forward portion of bbl. has bottom mounted bayonet lug. Top of bbl. at breech end has the navy anchor. Left side of bbl. has inspector marks "P/ H.B.R.". Rolling block action with standard Remington markings on the tang having last patent date "APRIL 17, 1866". Right side of receiver is marked "USN/ SPRINGFIELD/ 1870". 2-band fastened forearm and straight grip stock, steel musket buttplate is marked "U.S." forward of the peak screw with apparent rack # "35" close to the peak. Slotted tip iron wiping rod. Total quantity 22,013 of both types. The first 10,000 (Type I) were rejected due to rear sight placement and sold commercially. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: standard Model 1870 bayonet marked "U.S.N./ G.G.S./ 1870" on the left ricasso with Ames mfg. markings on the right. Fish scale brass hilt with raised mounting lug and birds head pommel. Hilt is marked "S" on the left side of the guard, with a partially visible "G.G.S." marked forward of the bayonet lug slot, and "IA" marked on the pommel. CONDITION: bright finished bbl. has a faded light gray appearance indicating application of touch up finish. Blued action retains 50% dull fading blue. Sanded and refinished wood has dark worn appearance with scattered handling marks. Stock has a crack extending from the right side of the receiver. Sound mechanics. Lightly pitted bore retains sound rifling. Bayonet blade shows scattered surface corrosion and spots of very light pitting. Brass hilt shows wear with numerous handling marks and small dents.
