TRAPDOOR RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 321126. The experimental 1884 was the first Springfield rifle to use the ramrod bayonet. Total production was 1013 rifles including 504 produced in December 1885 & 509 in January 1886. Bbl. 32 5/8". Blade front sight mounted in the solid sight cover. Buffington rear sight w/o letter markings. Replacement breechlock on this rifle is a low arch type w/ 1879 date. Flat style Springfield lock plate. Model 1884 round rod bayonet. 2 band walnut stock w/ trapdoor buttplate. Left side has 1885 dated "SWP" cartouche. Toeline has circle "P" firing proof. Fitted w/ a military leather sling. CONDITION: metal finish is fading showing general corrosion & light pitting on bbl. & forward portion of receiver. Stock shows heavy wear w/ marks & dents.
