CARBINE TO INFANTRY RIFLE. Cal. 50 RF. S# 22249. In 1871, Springfield Armory converted approx. 1,108 Spencer Carbines to infantry rifles by adding a 32 1/2" barrel; matching S# applied to the left side of the barrel. Replacement circular blade front sight with ladder notch rear sight. Model 1865 marking on top of receiver; Mfg. by Burnside Rifle Co. Action has a "Stabler cutoff" along with a saddle ring and bar on the left side. Walnut forearm with two barrel bands, slotted tipped ramrod, and added forearm checkering. Straight grip stock with "ESA" cartouche, mag. tube that loads through musket buttplate. CONDITION: gunsmith attention needed; trigger will not trip sear when hammer is at full cock. Barrel has a fair blue with heavy vise marks behind rear sight along with peppery oxidation throughout. Action has faint case colors with heavy brown patina. Wood has a fair finish with numerous marks, several deep gouges on buttstock, and scattered small cracks. Very good bore with strong rifling and scattered pitting. (01-25567/MD). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
