CONVERSION RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. NSN. Bbl. 36 5/8". Fixed front sight with folding leaf rear sight. Screw attached breech block is dated "1866" over eagles head proof. "1863" dated Springfield lock. 3-band walnut stock with iron fittings. Peak of buttplate is stamped "U.S.". Left ear of stock has 3 cartouches, 1 is legible and marked "ESA". Total of approx. 25,000 altered at Springfield using Model 1863 percussion muskets. Tulip tipped iron ramrod. CONDITION: bright finished bbl. has largely faded to brown. Lockplate and fittings have faded to mottled gray/brown showing areas of pitting. Sanded and refinished stock shows marks and deep dents having small cracks forward of the lock. Sound lock and action. Bore retains lightly worn rifling showing some light to mild pitting. PROVENANCE: Estate of Russell Dickerman. (01-27124/DS). ANTIQUE. $500-700.
