BLOCK RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. NSN. Bbl. 32 5/8", fixed front sight with graduated leaf rear sight just ahead of the receiver. First 10,000 rifles produced had the rear sight mounted just 1/2" ahead of the receiver. These are known as "Type I" rifles that were rejected by the navy and were subsequently sold commercially. They do not have navy anchors or military proofs. Left side of receiver has American eagle over "USN/ SPRINGFIELD/ 1870". Bayonet lug is mounted at the bottom of the bbl. between the forearm cap and front sight. Original finish was blue with case colored action. 2-band fastened forearm and straight grip walnut stock with steel musket buttplate. Slotted tip wiping rod. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: unmarked Model 1870 Type I, 21 3/8" yataghan bayonet and scabbard likely sold as surplus. CONDITION: bbl. blue is fading to brown. Action has mottled gray/brown appearance showing traces of case colors in protected areas. Sanded and refinished wood has dark aged appearance showing dents and handling marks. Left side has partially visible cartouche. Sound action. Bore is generally bright with sound rifling showing small spots of pitting. Bayonet blade has gray/brown faded appearance showing scattered light pitting and surface corrosion. Brass handle shows wear and handling marks. Leather scabbard shows age related cracking and deterioration. Brass throat and drag show scattered dents. (01-27027/DS). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,400.
