RING CARBINE. Cal. 54. S# 20680 Bbl. 21". Invented by the son of Nathan Starr, who started dynasty of American military Arms manufacture & inovaton. Starr carbine tested better than the Sharps breechloader then in service. 20000 were made, most issued to Western theater troops and well received. Standard configuration, lever action, dropping block hinged breech, back action lock marked "STARR ARMS Co / YONKERS NY". Frame stamped upper tang "STARR’S PATENT / SEPT 14TH 1858", barrel also marked "STARR ARMS * YONKERS NY" forward of 2 position 1 leaf rear sight. 2 Piece triggerguard also functions as breech opening lever. Brass furniture. This is nice complete and original survivor that saw service. CONDITION: very good overall, all matching & complete, good markings. Barrel has overall smooth plum patina, frame has silver/gray patina. Stock sound & well fit with only outline of inspector’s cartouche visible opposite lock, "TAB" stamped on top of comb is visible (inspector-Theodore A. Belknap). Barrel has inspection "HGS", and most metal parts have small "S" inspection stamps. Mechanics fine, good rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Michael E. Bray estate collection. (01-23298/JS). $1,500-2,500.
