RIFLE. Cal. 46 Rimfire. S#12715. Bbl. 28 1/2". This Ballard rifle is one of 3,000 contracted by the State of Kentucky between July 1864 and March 1865. The original contract for this rifle stipulated the caliber to be 56 rimfire but the actual production was changed to 46 rimfire. Round bbl with a stationary front sight and a hinged rear sight marked "500 YDS" & "250 YDS". The rear top of the bbl is stamped "12715" and the top of the front of the receiver is stamped "12715" & "KENTUCKY". The right side of the receiver is stamped "BALLARD'S PATTENT NOV. 5. 1861". The left side of the receiver "BALL & WILLIAMS Worcester Mass." & "MERWIN & GRAY AGT'S NEW YORK." The left side of the trigger guard is stamped "715". Iron trigger guard, buttplate, bbl bands, and sling swivels. Walnut stock. CONDITION: iron generally has a lightly mottled gray patina. Rifle's mechanism functions wells. Stock shows superficial dents and dings with minor losses at the top of the bbl channel. Fine bore. (01-26849/BF). ANTIQUE. $800-1,400.
