GAME SHOTGUN WITH CASE. Cal. 12 Ga., 2 3/4". S# 5209 (1882). This fine gun is built to Horatio Phillips 1879 patent with trigger plate action, which is cocked by a right hand side lever which also opens gun. The 30" two stripe damascus barrels are engraved "STEPHEN GRANT 67a St. James' Street London" "4" on narrow game rib. Barrel flats stamped with original London black powder proofs for 12B & 14M along with 2005 London nitro reproofs for 2 3/4" chambers. Trigger plate action which has the appearance of a boxlock has opening and cocking lever on right side and features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold) and double triggers. Action engraved with near full coverage well executed medium scroll. Maker's name is on each side and top tang is engraved "Patent". Trigger guard with scroll on bow has S# and "4" on tang. Straight grip buttstock of attractively streaked and well figured Circassian walnut measures 13 1/2" over checkered wood butt with steel heel and toe plates (top engraved "4"). Stock also features drop points flat top point pattern checkering and vacant silver oval. Toeline is nicely swept yielding an elegant and racy look. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. WEIGHT: 6 lb. 12 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in its original oak and leather case with brass corners embossed "A.M." "Army & Navy Club." on top. There are some old steam ship company labels attached. Interior is lined in red cloth and a Stephen Grant paper label is in lid along with charge card for this particular gun. Case contains a dog leash ? and exterior straps. CONDITION: good as refurbished. Barrels retaining most of an old rebrown with fair definition to pattern over marks, dings and scratches. Action is mostly bright silver with traces of case hardening color visible where protected. Engraving remains clear. Stocks retain nearly of an oil refinish, checkering recut. Sharp details somewhat softened. Bores are bright and shiny. Action is tight (hinge pin replaced). Case leather is quite dark with many stains and rubs. New straps and handle bases have been added and are good. Interior cloth renewed some time ago with labels reattached, considerable subsequent staining is evident. (01-24236/MGM).
