FEATURING THE EFFECTS OF A LIGHT ARTILLERY BUGLER. Outside frame measurements are 36" x 32". Inside painting measurements are 25 5/8" x 21 7/8". A very intriguing still life that appears to have been painted in the early 20th century. Painting features the personal effects of an enlisted man serving in a Light Artillery unit in the closing years of the Civil War, likely as a bugler. Items that can be seen in the still life include an M1864 Light Artillery shako, binoculars, a Light Artillery Bugler/Musician shell jacket, M1840 Light Artillery saber, fuses & other gunnery equipment, a valise & in the background, a framed photograph of an Artillery gun crew. The painting is signed in the lower left, “Catherine Ross”. Both the interior & exterior frame have an antique gold finish. Exterior frame features gold festoons at the corners on a black field. CONDITION: painting & frame show very little wear. There is minor craquelure to the painted surface, as one would expect to see in a painting of this age. are accurate though a bit naive. The use of impasto is minimal but effective where utilized. (02-15764/BF). $700-1,000.
