FRANZ NOWAK OF PRAGUE. Cal. 62. S# 685. Exhibiting the fine workmanship normally expected from Bohemian gunmakers. This rifle has 27" twist barrels gold inlaid "Fr: Nowak in Prag." on broad full length rib with single standing rear sight. Breech ends of barrels are relief carved with a band of fern leaves and have gold lines. Breech plugs have vented platinum blow outs and engraving of hunting horn on rib extension. Broad and long breech iron is near fully scroll engraved and gold inlaid with fancy border around engraved maker's name and address. Unusually shaped tall front spring locks with flat faced hammers having relief carved wolfs heads are scroll engraved at fronts. Game scenes are on tails, with recumbent deer on left lockplate and sitting hound on right. Front trigger is set. Trigger plate has shell engraved pineapple finial. Trigger guard with filed in lip at front is engraved with Russian boar on bow. S# is on transition from bow to scroll carved wooden grip. Somewhat figured European walnut straight grip stock measures 14" over steel buttplate with long top strap engraved with scrolls and a sleeping stag. Stock features low swept right hand cheekpiece, a steel sling button along with a large horn button are on toeline. Wooden patchbox with sliding cover is carved with roses. Depressing center of front rose releases latch. Inset checkering at grip is very closely spaced and has relief carved corners. A small silver rectangle in front of trigger plate is engraved "D" (?). Stock attaches to barrels with captive sidebolt through rectangular engraved silver escutcheons. Hickory ramrod with horn tip has steel tail (worm under brass cap) and mounts through two plain pipes and thimble matching trigger plate. A wide sling loop is attached to rear pipe. CONDITION: very fine. Barrels retaining nearly all of their original brown with some scattered flecking. Other metal parts retain over 90% original dark case hardening color. Stock retains nearly all of its French polish finish with some light marks. Bores are exceptional, bright and shiny. Right barrel rifling has twist; left barrel is straight. Locks are crisp although a bit gummy form congealed oil, need cleaning. Front trigger will set. (01-26471/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,000-7,000.
