John Krider, born in 1813, apprenticed to Prosper Vallee, well known Philadelphia gunsmith, in 1826. Krider bought Vallee's business in 1839 and began building guns, rifles and pistols under his own name. By 1850 he had over $2,000 invested in his business and employed 10 people. By 1860 his business was worth over $10,000 and he employed 24 hands. Krider made the first prototypes of the famous LeMat revolver. Krider was also an avid ornithologist with a large collection of eggs, nests and study skins housed on the upper floor of his building at the corner of 2nd and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia. He was known for producing good quality weapons at a decent price and his rifles were often the choice of settlers heading west. Cal. 40. S# NSN. The 32" browned octagon barrels are fitted with full buck horn rear and silver blade front sights on concave rib engraved "PHILAD.a". Nicely filed case hardened breech plugs do not have blow outs and are scroll engraved on rib extension. Breech iron is also engraved with nicely cut shaded scroll. Back spring locks with flat faced serpentine hammers are also engraved with scroll and "KRIDER" is stamped on the tail of each plate. Double set triggers are fitted; right lock is fired when triggers are set; left lock trips on second pull of front trigger. Scroll engraved iron trigger guard has scroll at rear forming pistol grip. American walnut stock measures 14-1/8" over shallow crescent buttplate with scroll engraved top tang and 3" return. Stock features swept shadow line right hand cheekpiece, point pattern grip checkering, case hardened and engraved patchbox on right side of butt and a vacant silver rectangle at top of grip. Stock attaches to barrels with sidebolt through shaped and engraved steel escutcheons. Hickory ramrod with silver tip and brass tail with worn mounts through two plain pipes and engraved steel thimble. CONDITION: very fine. Barrels retaining over 90% original brown with some sharp edge wear with some scratches and nicks on both barrels toward muzzle. Nearly all case hardening color remains on breech plugs, breech iron, locks and patchbox. Buttplate has most of its color. Trigger guard shows some cleaning to gray with brown splotches. Stock retains nearly all of its original finish with some marks, some quite heavy and pronounced around grip on both sides. These and the marks on barrel probably resulted from rifle being transported in some sort of a rack. Bores are bright and shiny. Mechanically good. Spur of left hammer broken off (crystallized) and repaired with Super Glue. (01-26486/MGM). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
