BY SIMON JOURJON CA 1725. EX. W. KEITH NEAL COLLECTION. Cal. 20 Ga. NSN. The 42" blued barrels transition from octagonal at breeches to ovate extending to front sight band, then round to muzzles. Breech ends are gold inlaid with scrolled acanthus and geometric elements. Bright polished breech iron is engraved with snowflakes and some scroll. Locks, with slightly arched plates and rebated tails are fitted with integral faceted pans, unbridled friction frizzens and feather springs with spear finials. Lock plates have filed in ovolo mouldings on bevels, rebated tails are engraved with scene of stags and hounds on one lock and wild boar on the other. Serpentine cocks are engraved with scroll emanating from the mouths of relief carved dragons. Relief carved dolphins form frizzen stops. "Simon Jourjon" (working in St. Etienne 1700-68) is on each lockplate. Internal inspection reveals bridled tumblers and maker's mark "M" cross and orb "G". Full length stock of nicely marbled European walnut is iron mounted. Wide buttplate has very long top spur beautifully relief engraved with sprays of acanthus and intertwined dragons. Trigger guard with acanthus leaves on relief finial has more relief engraved acanthus on bow. Stock is nicely relief carved with tendrils of acanthus behind barrel tang and either end of trigger guard finials. Stock attaches to barrels with three pierced iron bands with engraved detail to geometric and foliate piercings. A W. Keith Neal Collection medal # "G382" and Bonham's Auction tag are tied to trigger guard. CONDTION: exceptionally fine. Barrels retaining nearly all their original blue with some scattered freckling. All iron parts retain most of their original bright polish with darkening and cleaning evident on buttplate and barrel bands. Trigger guard tang is also darkened. Stock retains over 90% original oil finish with a fair scattering of marks and dings most notably a 1 1/2" area heavily dented on right side of butt toward toe. Bores are bright and shiny with some light pitting toward muzzles, mechanically crisp. A beautiful early flintlock. (01-21978/MGM). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
