TARGET RIFLE. Cal. 6.5x55mm. S# 24389. Bbl. 29 1/2". Originally mfg. as a standard M/96 bolt action rifle by Mauser Oberndorf in 1899, this example was subsequently reworked into a target variation for use by the Frivilliga Skytterorelsen ("Swedish Shooting Movement" or "FSR"). The receiver is marked "WAFFENFABRIK/ MAUSER/ OBERNDORF A/N/ 1899" over the chamber, with a "G.R." inspector proof and the S# marked on the left. Numerous parts are properly marked with the Swedish crown proof. Metal components exhibit a blue finish overall, save for on the bolt assembly and follower which are polished in-the-white. 1-piece plain wood straight grip stock features grasping grooves, with a Type 2 brass disc inlaid on the right side of the buttstock. Black enamel finished blade globe front sight with blued steel Soderin diopter rear sight. Original rear sight base is present, with the ladder and slide being absent. Bbl. is threaded at the muzzle for a blank firing device. All serialized parts are matching and include the receiver, bolt stop housing, bolt body, bolt shroud, safety lever, cocking piece, floorplate, buttplate, and bbl. bands, with some parts having likely been renumbered at the time of conversion. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their arsenal blue finish, exhibiting some scattered areas of wear and thinning that are fading to gray and brown patinas overall. In-the-white parts retain a bright appearance. Buttplate has faded to a gray/brown patina, exhibiting some scattered spots of light pitting. Mirror bore, exhibiting scattered spots of hardened grease, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Stock shows some superficial marks from handling and storage, but otherwise remains sound. An attractive example of a Swedish 1896 FSR rifle. (26-1370/MLW). CURIO. $300-450.
