MARNER OF SAAZ. Cal. 28 Ga. S# 342.07. The 28 1/4" dovetailed barrels with reinforced breech section are gold inlaid "JOHANN MARNER SAAZ" on slightly raised game rib (name not found. Saaz is a small city in the southeast corner of Austria). Breech sections are stamped with steel type and flush gold inlaid with small triangles of scroll and floral motifs. Barrel flats are stamped with 1907 Vienna nitro proofs, S# and "NICHT FUR KUGEL". A sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Square back, case hardened sidelock action features non automatic safety ("Safe" inlaid in gold), crossbolt third fastener, gold inlaid arrow cocking indicators and double triggers. Action is engraved with sprays of scroll within line borders; top of action and top lever have more gold inlaid scroll. Lockplates are engraved with more scroll at front, rear portions are very finely engraved with game scenes. Five grouse are flying and feeding in a woodland clearing on left lockplate; a crouching fox watches two departing pheasant on right. Horn capped pistol grip buttstock of lightly marbled and figured European walnut measures 14 3/8" over 1/2" thick checkered horn buttplate. Stock features right hand shadow line cheekpiece, elongated drop points and point pattern grip checkering. A sling loop matching barrel is on toeline. Matching splinter forend with inlet horn tip has Deeley release. MEASUREMENTS: Bbls: Bore Diameter: L .537". R .537". Restriction: L .015" (mod). R .015" (mod). Wall thickness: L .030". R .030". STOCK: DAH: 2 13/16". DAC: 1 9/16". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14 3/8". WEIGHT: 5 lb. 12 oz. CONDITION: good to very good. Barrels retaining most of what appears to be their original blue. There are traces of original case hardening color on action where protected, but surfaces generally present a mottled pewter gray. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish showing moderate wear and the usual marks and dings. Horn shows shrinkage and some minor losses. There are some minor stress cracks behind lockplates. Bores are relatively shiny with a good number of scattered pits, fairly deep in right barrel. Action is tight. Barrels are slightly off face. Sideplates and lump tapped up a bit to tighten.
