INFANTERIEGEWEHR BREECHLOADING RIFLE. Cal. 18mm. S# 1563. Bbl. 40 5/8". Originally mfg. in Switzerland as a Infanteriegewehr Modell 1842, this example was subsequently modified via the addition of the Milbank-Amsler breechloading conversion and re-designated as an M1942/59/67 Infanteriegewehr. The lockplate exhibits several partially discernible characters that appear to be "LASIE" (possibly originally reading "BLASIE" prior to conversion and scrubbing of the lockplate). The top of the hinged breechblock is stamped " GER .SULZER". The bbl. is stamped "Z." followed by a shielded "ZZ" insignia (that appears to be the coat of arms for the Zurich canton) and "Z.5294". Swiss military Cross/E inspector proofs are present overall, with a shielded Star/M present on rear of the trigger guard and on the bbl. bands. Plain wood straight grip buttstock with iron furniture. Matching numbers are present on the bbl., stock, breechblock, and extractor, with remaining small serialized components being mismatched. Forward lockplate screw has broken at one time, with approximately half of the screw remaining inside the screw slot. CONDITION: metal components retain a gray patina, exhibiting areas of surface oxidation, mild pitting, as well as areas of darker discoloration overall. Mirror bore, exhibiting strong rifling throughout. Stock exhibits scattered marks and minor impressions from storage and handling, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable overall. (01-24671/MLW). ANTIQUE. $600-800.
