RIFLE.
Cal. 40 Straight. S# 682 is hand stamped on the top tang. Bbl. Unmarked 29 1/2” octagon. Breech end has “40 CAL” cal. marking only. Dovetail front sight w/ flat top sporting rear sight, missing elevator. Meacham style conversion of a Civil War era military percussion action. Lockplate has working parts of primer feed removed. All original action markings have been removed. Pewter tipped walnut forearm. German silver & pewter inlays. Original military stock & steel buttplate. Stock has added hand checkering w/ wood filler in saddle ring bar slot on left side. In the movie ornate sheet metal overlays were tacked to both sides of the stock. Inlays are present & could easily be reattached. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: this historic movie rifle was used by Marlin Brando in his role as Lee Clayton in the 1975 “Missouri Breaks”. Binder of authentication includes a certificate of authenticity signed by Allan C. Frisch, archivist & conservator of inventory for Stembridge Gun Rentals in May 1999 when Stembridge sold its inventory. This rifle was their last original Sharps buffalo gun in the arsenal. Also included are copies of articles about the movie & its stars Marlin Brando & Jack Nicholson as well as a video of this classic movie. CONDITION: bbl & action are refinished w/ fading to a mottled brown appearance. Forearm shows heavy wear w/ dents & marks having chips at front & rear areas. Pewter forearm tip is chipped on right side. Original stock shows heavy wear w/ dents, marks & tack holes having small cracks & chips around action & top tang. Checkering is partially visible showing heavy wear. Bore is dark & pitted w/ remnants of rifling. Several action screws show screwdriver distortion. Sound action w/ functioning lock. (01-22269/DS).
